Pulai polls: EC expecting 70% voter turnout

JOHOR BARU: The Election Commission (EC) projects a turnout of over 70% for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections on Saturday (Sept 9).

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said this was based on voter turnout during the six Aug 12 state elections which was quite low.

“We are urging voters to come out and vote on polling day and do not forget to bring their MyKad to the polling centres to make sure the voting process goes smoothly.

“The EC is hoping that the voters will observe the advisory time that we have given to them,” he told the media after inspecting final preparations for the Pulai by-election at Menara MBJB here on Friday (Sept 8).

The by-elections were called following the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who was also domestic trade and cost of living minister, on July 23.

A total of 166,653 voters are registered in Pulai, and 40,379 in Simpang Jeram.

Each seat will see a three-cornered fight involving Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional and an Independent.
